What a battery replacement price should include
A low headline price means little if the extras are charged separately. Before you compare, check that the quote covers:
- The battery itself, with the brand and capacity stated. AAP fits AKIRO, BOSCH, AMARON and HOPPECKE batteries.
- Fitting and the call out fee. AAP’s listed prices already include the onsite replacement fee.
- A warranty. AAP’s batteries carry a 1 year warranty. See what a car battery warranty covers and how to claim.
- Testing. A load test of the old battery and an alternator check, so you do not buy a battery for a problem it will not fix.
- Coding, if your car needs it.
Why car battery prices differ so much
Two quotes of $180 and $600 can both be honest. The gap usually comes from these factors:
- Technology. AGM batteries cost more to make than EFB, and EFB costs more than standard flooded.
- Size and capacity. Larger SUVs and MPVs need bigger batteries with higher cold cranking amps, which cost more than the small battery in a hatchback.
- Brand. Premium brands and exclusive ranges are priced differently from value brands. Compare the BOSCH, AMARON and HOPPECKE price lists.
- Car make. Continental cars often need a specific AGM battery and coding, which pushes the total up.
- Where it is fitted. Workshop prices can look lower, but you may pay for towing or lose time. Onsite fitting brings the technician to your car. Read more about factors that affect the cost of a car battery.
- Warranty and service. A longer warranty, testing and an exchange policy are part of the price.
- Singapore’s heat. A hot engine bay shortens battery life, which is why a battery that lasts 4 to 6 years in a cooler country often lasts 2 to 4 years here.
Standard, EFB or AGM: which does your car need?
Fitting the wrong battery is the most expensive mistake. A standard flooded battery in a start stop car is cheaper on the day but is not built for the deep, repeated discharges that start stop demands, and it can fail within 12 to 18 months. You then pay for a second battery.
- Check the label on your current battery. It usually states EFB or AGM.
- Check for start stop. If your engine switches off at traffic lights, you need EFB or AGM, not a standard battery.
- Check the manual for the manufacturer’s specified type and capacity.
- Still not sure? Send us your car model and we will confirm the right type before fitting. See whether your car needs an EFB battery and what to know about AGM batteries.
Battery coding and registration: the cost people forget
Many continental cars and some start stop cars monitor the battery’s age and charge through a battery management system. When a new battery goes in, the system must be told, which is called coding or registration. If it is skipped, the car may overcharge or undercharge the new battery and shorten its life, however good the battery is. Budget about $50 to $150 where coding is required. We code or register the battery during the same visit. For a BMW in particular, read whether you really need battery registration after a battery change.
Rent or buy: the AKIRO Rent A Car Battery option
If you prefer a lower upfront cost, AAP’s AKIRO Rent A Car Battery programme lets you rent instead of buy. You pay a deposit of half the purchase price, for example $75 for a Honda Jazz, plus a flat $30 onsite fee per visit. The rental includes a 6 month warranty, and the deposit is fully refundable when you return the battery.
Hybrid and electric cars: 12V battery cost
Hybrid and electric cars still have a 12V battery that runs the electronics and starts the car’s systems. When it fails, the car can refuse to start even with a full traction battery. AAP lists the BYD Atto 3 at $160 and the BYD e6 at $160 onsite. See our BYD battery replacement page and Honda Vezel Hybrid page for hybrid and EV models.
How to get a fair car battery quote: 7 questions to ask
- What battery brand, type and capacity are you quoting?
- Is fitting included, and is there a separate call out or after hours fee?
- How long is the warranty, and who handles a claim?
- Will you load test my old battery and check my alternator first?
- Does my car need coding, and is it included?
- What happens to my old battery?
- Is the price valid for my exact car model?
How long a car battery lasts in Singapore and when to replace it
A standard battery typically lasts about 2 to 4 years here, and a correctly matched start stop battery often lasts 3 to 5 years. Watch for a slow or laboured crank, dimming lights when the engine turns over, a start stop system that stops working, a need for repeated jump starts, a swollen battery case or a rotten egg smell. If you have needed a jump start recently, treat it as a final warning. Read 9 signs your car battery is dying, when to jump start and when to replace and how long a car battery lasts in Singapore. To make the next one last, see how to extend your car battery life, and check how to clean corroded terminals and why a battery drains overnight.
Can you replace a car battery yourself?
On an older car with a standard battery and no start stop system, a confident DIYer can usually manage it. Disconnect the negative terminal first, reconnect the positive terminal first, and reset any radio or memory settings afterwards. On a car with an EFB or AGM battery, or any start stop system, the new battery must be registered with a diagnostic tool or it can be charged at the wrong profile and fail early. You also lose the testing and the fitting warranty. For disposal of the old battery, see how to dispose of an old car battery in Singapore.
What we check before replacing your battery
A battery swap should never be a guess based on age alone. Before we recommend a replacement, we:
- Load test the existing battery to confirm it has actually failed.
- Check alternator output so the new battery charges correctly from day one.
- Inspect terminals and earth straps for corrosion and parasitic drain.
- Fit the manufacturer specified type and capacity for your exact model.
- Code or register the new battery to the battery management system where the car requires it.
If testing shows the alternator, not the battery, is the real problem, we tell you before you spend on a battery that would fail for the same reason. Common standard, EFB and AGM sizes are carried onsite for same day fitting across Singapore. See our completed jobs for real examples, and our scheduled battery replacement service if you want to replace before it fails.
Car battery replacement cost: frequently asked questions
How much does a car battery replacement cost in Singapore?
Most standard car batteries cost about $120 to $280 fitted onsite. AAP’s October 2026 price list runs from $120 to $280 for common models. EFB and AGM batteries for start stop and continental cars cost more, with Singapore workshops quoting roughly $220 to $450 for EFB and $320 to $900 for AGM. Coding the new battery, where the car needs it, is typically another $50 to $150.
How much is a car battery replacement for a Toyota Vios or Honda Jazz?
On AAP’s October 2026 price list, a Toyota Vios battery replacement is $160 and a Honda Jazz is $150, onsite. The price includes a new battery, a 1 year warranty, the onsite replacement fee and diagnostic tests.
Does the price include installation and warranty?
Yes. AAP’s listed prices include a new battery, a 1 year warranty, the onsite replacement fee and diagnostic tests. When you compare quotes from other providers, check that the call out fee, fitting and warranty are all included.
How do I know if my car needs a standard, EFB or AGM battery?
Check the label on your current battery, your owner’s manual, and whether your car has a start stop system. Cars with start stop usually need EFB or AGM, and many continental cars need AGM. If you are unsure, send AAP your car model and they will confirm the correct type before fitting.
Do I need to code or register a new car battery?
Many continental cars, including BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Volkswagen and Volvo, and some start stop cars need the new battery registered to the battery management system. Skipping this can lead to wrong charging and a shorter battery life. Coding typically costs about $50 to $150 where it is required.
How long does a car battery last in Singapore?
A standard battery typically lasts about 2 to 4 years in Singapore’s heat. Start stop batteries such as EFB and AGM often last 3 to 5 years when they are correctly matched to the car and properly coded.
Is it cheaper to replace the car battery myself?
You may save the fitting charge on an older car with a standard battery and no start stop system. You also give up the diagnostic tests and the fitting warranty, and on start stop or continental cars a DIY swap without coding can shorten the battery’s life, so the saving is often small.
Why do some providers charge more in an emergency or at night?
Some providers add an emergency or after hours premium on top of the battery price. Ask whether the call out fee is included before you agree. AAP’s listed onsite prices already include the onsite replacement fee.
Can I rent a car battery instead of buying one?
Yes. Under the AKIRO Rent A Car Battery programme you pay a refundable deposit of half the purchase price, for example $75 for a Honda Jazz, plus a flat $30 onsite fee per visit, and the rental includes a 6 month warranty. The deposit is fully refundable when you return the battery.
How do I tell whether it is the battery or the alternator?
A load test on the battery and a check of the alternator’s output will tell the two apart. If a jump start works but the car goes flat again within days, the charging system may be at fault, and a new battery alone will not fix it.
